Lead auditors need command of the complete audit process and the ability to coordinate people, resources and communication while taking overall responsibility for audit delivery. This course develops those leadership responsibilities and reinforces each stage of the process through extensive guided practice.
Instruction Reinforced Through Practice: Apply each stage of the audit process through repeated guided exercises based on your own operations.
Build Judgment Across Varied Scenarios: Work through different processes, evidence trails, findings and challenging audit situations rather than practicing the method only once.
Receive Individual Coaching: Get direct observation, feedback and correction from an IRCA-certified lead auditor throughout the exercises.
Develop Audit Leadership: Practice assigning work, coordinating resources, leading teams and meetings, managing communication and team dynamics, and maintaining overall control of the audit process.
Add Assessed Certification: The optional exam is included. Participants who pass earn a Certificate of Attainment and digital badge with Exemplar Global Competency Units QM, AU and TL.
Practicing auditing at our own company brought this all to life.
Chris Wright / Precision Components
Prepared for Successful Certification: Precision Components trained a team of eight auditors, who then used their new skills to fine-tune the QMS, leading to a certification audit with zero nonconformities.
After the live course, participants will be prepared to:
Plan and coordinate complete internal audits by defining objectives, scope, criteria, resources, sampling and team assignments.
Conduct process-based audits confidently by following process trails, interviewing personnel and evaluating objective evidence.
Make consistent, defensible judgments and document clear findings across a range of audit situations.
Lead audit teams and meetings while managing time, communication, team dynamics and difficult conversations.
Report results and oversee follow-up while preserving objectivity, confidentiality and appropriate auditor boundaries.
The course combines focused instruction, discussion, scenario work and extensive guided audit practice. Your instructor adapts the examples, exercises and feedback to your QMS, processes, documentation and audit priorities.
Audit Principles and ISO 9001: Interpreting requirements from an auditor's perspective and applying impartiality, evidence-based decision-making and appropriate auditor boundaries.
Audit Planning and Leadership: Objectives, scope, criteria, risks, sampling, audit plans, work assignments, resources, team coordination, communication, team dynamics, meeting leadership and overall responsibility for audit delivery.
Process-Based Auditing: Following process trails, interviewing personnel, examining records and evaluating evidence against ISO 9001 and your own QMS requirements.
Findings, Reporting and Follow-Up: Making defensible judgments, writing clear findings, communicating results and verifying corrective action.
Extensive Guided Practice: Reinforcing each stage of the audit process through repeated exercises across varied scenarios, with observation, coaching and opportunities to improve performance.
Confidence comes from repetition. Each practice audit gives participants another opportunity to follow the evidence, make a judgment, communicate a finding and improve the next time.

This 5-day Lead Auditor course adds the responsibilities of coordinating audit work, assigning resources, leading audit teams and meetings, managing communication and team dynamics, and taking overall responsibility for audit delivery. Its two additional days also provide more varied practice, repetition and individual instructor feedback.
Before the course, your instructor reviews your QMS, processes, documentation and audit priorities. We then adapt the examples, scenarios and guided audit exercises to your organization.
Participants complete repeated, guided audit exercises using your actual processes, procedures and records. Throughout the course, they practice planning, following process trails, gathering evidence, making judgments, leading audit activities and communicating findings, with feedback after each exercise.
Live virtual training can typically start within 1 week. On-site training requires 3 weeks' notice to coordinate instructor travel.
